Artist's Comments

New hero shot for my clockwork girl, story has changed a bit and I wanted to draw her in full color. I"m still playing with the palette, but so far I do like this. I'll put in the palette studies later....

Please let me know how to make this stronger, I'm submitting it to best of Ringling, and I'd really like to get it in. Thanks!

I really like it :) The colour of her clothes looks nice and 'industrial' - it's like the colour of rusted cogs. I like how the hands of the clock are covered by the numbers, so it seems the girl is inside the clock. One thing that I thought I might suggest is that I wouldn't have known she is a clockwork girl, rather than a real girl, had you not told me so in your comments. Perhaps a piece of her leg or arm could have a small cut out, showing some inner cogs? Unless of course, it is relevant to the story that she is not obviously a clockwork girl. The shading on her hair is very nicely done, and the glowy green heart on her dress is a nice touch. What are the lines on her face and neck supposed to mean? She doesn't have them on her legs and arms, so I'm curious :)

Also, in her collar-area just above the breasts, the dress seems to be a continuation of her body, rather than a dress placed over it, while with the sleeves the dress appears to be over her body, as a normal dress would be.

Overall though, I think it's an incredible painting, and all the gear-looking parts to her dress look amazing.

hey wow thanks for the comment! We (the faculty and I) want to make her as real as possible, and its revealed in the opening shot that she is part of the clock, turning with the gears, (so yes she's inside)so it didn't seem necessary to overdo the clockwork part, since its kind of spelled out for you in the animation. I do see where you're coming from though. And we want her to look as dainty as possible to I don't want to cut out a piece of her, but I understand that point too. She's supposed to be made of wood, which is what the lines on her face are, but when I submitted this I guess I forgot to put WIP, cause I added the lines for the rest of her limbs right after that, I'll have to resubmit :P And since she's carves out of wood thats why her corset is a continuation, and the sleeves are cogs as well but I needed more angles and wedges in the character design so I needed to play with the arm design.

It's really nice to get an outside opinion like this. I've been working so close with this design for a while, I needed a fresh eye. I'll keep this in mind as I'm tweaking the design, Thank you so much!

Hey np :) I'm glad you found my comment helpful. To be honest, I didn't realize that the lines were wood grains, although they do make her face look 'solid' rather than soft like skin. Perhaps adding some dark rings would make it more obvious? Of course, I don't look at wood much :giggle:

yea thats a good idea, it'll give it more texture too. I was definitely going for a hard look. She's going to be a 3d character so it'll show up more when I model and texture her. Thanks again!
